What is an SIV?

SIV stands for Special Immigrant Visa. Many of World Relief of the Triangle's Iraqi and Afghani clients are in the United States with Special Immigrant Visas. This means that they collaborated with the U.S. government, usually as an interpreter for the U.S. Armed Forces in their country. This eventually put them in grave danger from the political forces of their country, and the U.S. government granted them SIV’s to immigrate here. They receive the same services as our other refugee clients but have different legal documentation.

Our SIV clients tend to be well educated and speak relatively good English. Based on their backgrounds, their needs and experience of being in the United States can be very different from other refugees’.
